So Benedict Cumberbatch made a disparaging remark about a tv show. I really don't think anyone in the scheme of things cares very much (even the people who made or are in that show) but I think the thing I dislike (more than tabloids taking their bits out of context) are fans stating that Benedict should be sweet and nice and never have an opinion - so that his fans can love him unconditionally. But I wouldn't wish that on anyone. Yeah, I've had the same advice as a blogger for a decade. Just be niiiiccee and more people will like you. But I'd rather be myself than a persona, and it gets tiring to censor oneself and try to please all the people all the time. I'd rather see a flesh and blood person there, warts and all, well, those are the type of people I follow (like Misha and Gackt) and I find myself caring about. And I give them the benefit of the doubt, same as I'd want someone to give me, I track down the original interview or article and read in context before I decide what to think about it.

One of the things I enjoy about Benedict is he is smart man. A smart, 36 year-old grown man with opinions just like the rest of us.

I agree with you, Karadin.

But for me, honestly? I don't care what he says.

If he called me out by name and made a disparaging comment then I might perk up and pay attention ;) Have him over for coffee and hash it out . . . yeah, that would work.

Yup. I can't recall the last time that I changed my mind because of what a celeb said, it's just if I agree with them or not.

Thank you for this. He's entirely entitled to his opinions, and the world would be a much more boring place if he censored himself.

Benedict can be a dickhead, that's a fact, just like any other human. He gets butthurt sometimes (because Downton Abbey is awesome) and his "oh it's not fair because people think I'm posh crap" really rubs people up the wrong way here in the UK. His new show starts this weekend, so hahaha he pwned everyone by throwing out a few lines that he knew would annoy people into an interview so he doesn't have to do any other promo. WIN! Saying how he wanted his fatsuit to be fatter and more unattractive was AWESOME shit-stirring gold.

Mischa is really really really sarcastic and some fans seem to not get that. I find that sad.

Everyone can be a dickhead (and if they aren't I don't think they are real) and that's the thing, I don't care as much about what he's saying, as all the fanblogs saying 'oh he should know better' 'he should play the PR game' 'he should be careful what he's saying'

BORING.

PR game is exactly that, a game.

It's weird how celebrity media reporting has changed over the years. Years ago actors could be actors, raise hell and it be known that whatever they did on screen COMPLETELY overshadowed the shit they did outside of their work, even though their exploits were still reported. It was about respect for their craft being the most important part of them. I'm just thinking of how Oli Reed and Petey O's escapades would of been treated by the conservative press nowadays?

Probably because of the rise of the talentless celebrity/kid with super-rich parents who have nothing BUT salacious deeds to report that the same style of media attention is used on talented actors/musicians who get a writeup for shit like wearing an unusual shirt instead of promotion of their latest play/show etc.

Example - that rant by Ben goes on for several paragraphs, then at the bottom as an afterthought a single sentence about his biggest TV role since he landed SHERLOCK. What? That's just wrong.

Kind of reminds me that Jared and Jensen (of spn) are always being pressed to leave their 'little' show behind and do 'bigger and better' things, but they are perfectly happy with their gig, working with people they like, making a good product and NOT being uber famous. Jared in particular has said while he loves Tom Hanks, he'd never want to be that famous, and I can see why, you'd never have a life. Oh and of course, now that people are going back to the original article and putting BC's words in context, (they are wry and off the cuff and not at all as read by the tabloids) BC's fandom is settling down at last, but I have no time to spend on them, if they can turn so fast on someone they professed to love so much a week before, meh. That's more annoying than the people who always disliked him for whatever reason.
